Pets and Service Animals

Federal Regulations require public transit providers to permit service animals to accompany individuals with disabilities in vehicles and facilities. ART requires that all service animals remain in the passenger’s control in order to not pose a danger to other passengers.

A service animal is defined as any guide dog, signal dog, or other animal individually trained to work or perform tasks for an individual with a disability, including, but not limited to, guiding individuals with impaired vision, alerting individuals with impaired hearing to intruders or sounds, providing minimal protection or rescue work, pulling a wheelchair, or fetching dropped items. The crime deterrent effects of an animal’s presence and the provision of emotional support, well-being, comfort, or companionship do not constitute work or tasks for the purposes of definition as a service animal.

Even though regulations do not require public transit providers to transport pets or comfort animals, in an effort to provide convenience to our passengers, ART permits passengers to ride with their pets or comfort animals; however, all non-service animals transported on ART buses are required to be kenneled.

Even if a determination was made that an animal is a service animal, ART personnel reserve the right to remove an animal from a transit vehicle if the passenger does not maintain adequate control over the animal or if the animal poses a direct threat to other passengers.

Strollers

All strollers on a bus must be folded and stored so as not to obstruct access to exits.

Passengers are not allowed to leave any items in a doorway or aisle. All aisles must be clear from a potential trip hazard to allow the driver to move freely and easily, allow riders to exit by any window or door in an emergency, and protect riders from injury if items should fall or shift while in transport.
